The Blanket stitch is a beautiful stitch that is great for bordering, or using as a foundation to embroider designs around it. It is super simple to achieve (don’t let it fool you), and above I have pictured the steps for the most common way people are taught how to embroider this stitch.
The picture shows how to stitch this twice! So 2 backwards “L’s” is not one while stitch. It’s two of them. Continue steps for as long as your design requires.
Before we start stitching:
Draw 2 parallel lines to help stitch evenly. You can even mark where you will bring you needle up thru and back down the fabric.
I usually use one whole piece of thread, however you can use whatever you’d like.
This stitch is commonly used to combined 2 pieces of fabric together, or to ‘seal’ the edges and prevent fraying for 1+ piece of fabric.
Steps-by-Step Instructions:
Step 1:
Starting at the bottom line, bring your needle up thru the fabric. SStep 2:
At a diagonal, push needle back thru fabric on the top line.
Step 2:
Coming up thru your fabric, bring needle up on bottom line directly below the last marking you went thru. Pull tightly against thread. Make sure your needle is on the inside of the backwards “L” you made (refer to picture, step 3, above).
Step 3:
Repeat! Continue by going back thru fabric at a diagonal on the top line (refer to step one)
